Local listening

Offline text to speech on iPhone

Prepare your content and voice resources before you disconnect. Aurader supports local listening through Apple system voices and supported on-device neural voices.

System, premium and cloud speech engine choices in Aurader

Aurader can read supported content offline when you use an available Apple system voice or supported on-device neural voice. Cloud and custom provider voices still require a network connection.

What works offline?

Apple system voicesYes, when the selected voice is installed and availableDepends on voices offered by iOS or iPadOS
Aurader on-device neuralYes, after required model resources are availablePremium neural narration currently supports English
Cloud or custom providerNoDepends on the provider

Offline is a property of the whole path, not only the play button. The file, voice resources and app must all be ready on the device before connectivity disappears.

Prepare before a flight or trip

  1. Import the content. Add the EPUB, PDF, TXT or article while you still have access to the original source.
  2. Open it once. Confirm that the text loads and the reading order is usable.
  3. Select a local engine. Choose a system voice or supported on-device neural voice, not a cloud or custom provider.
  4. Test in airplane mode. Play a passage with network access disabled before you rely on it during travel.
  5. Check storage and power. Keep enough device space for content and voice resources, and plan for battery use during long sessions.

Local processing and privacy

When a supported engine generates speech locally, the text needed for narration does not need to be sent to a speech provider. This can be useful for personal notes, unpublished drafts and travel where network reliability is poor.

Other app features may have their own network behavior. Translation, web import and cloud voice services can require external providers. Offline narration should not be interpreted as a claim that every app feature is permanently disconnected.

Limits to understand

  • A system voice may need to be downloaded through iOS before it is fully available offline.
  • Premium on-device neural narration currently supports English, not every system language.
  • A scanned PDF still needs usable text, even when the selected voice is local.
  • Cloud and custom voice requests cannot be generated without a connection.
  • Content protected by digital rights management may not be importable.

If playback stops offline

Reconnect briefly and verify the selected engine. If a cloud provider is active, switch to a system or supported local voice. Confirm that the book opens without fetching a remote source and that the selected system voice is installed on the device.
