You can listen to a PDF on iPhone by importing it into Aurader and selecting a speech engine. The file needs an accessible text layer. Image-only scans must be converted with OCR first.
Before you import the PDF
Open the file in Files and try selecting a sentence. Selectable text is a good sign that speech extraction will work. If you can only select the page as an image, use OCR or scan the relevant pages into an Aurader article.
Complex layouts can affect reading order. A paper with two columns, marginal notes and a large table may not sound as linear as a report with one continuous text column.
Five steps to start listening
- Add the PDF. Open Aurader and import the file into the Bookshelf from Files or an iOS share action.
- Open the document. Let the PDF load, then move to the page or section where playback should begin.
- Choose a voice. Pick a system voice for broad device language support, a supported local neural voice for English, or a cloud or custom option.
- Start playback. Press play. Aurader follows the current spoken sentence so your eyes can rejoin the text at any point.
- Adjust the session. Tune speed and pitch, then add optional background audio or set a sleep timer.
Pick the right voice for the situation
For travel or private material, start with a system or supported on-device voice. After required voice resources are present, those engines can work without sending synthesis text to a remote provider. Premium on-device neural speech currently supports English.
Cloud and compatible custom providers can offer additional voices, but they need network access and receive the text needed to generate speech. Use them when their voice options matter more than offline processing.
Common PDF problems
No text is detected
The file is probably a scan or the text is protected. OCR the document, request an accessible version, or create an article from the passage.
The order sounds wrong
Check for columns, sidebars, headers and footnotes. Converting the source to clean text or EPUB can produce a more natural sequence.
Characters are missing
Embedded fonts and unusual character mappings can interfere with extraction. Try copying a sentence into another app. If the pasted text is damaged, the source PDF needs conversion.
